Seen as i have finished my first year of university and completed my year of community living in University halls, i thought i would share with you the positives and negatives of halls. In the last few weeks I've had people asking me about living at home vs halls and so it's fitting i write this now for all those booking uni accommodation.
Firstly, let's start with an advantage....FLATMATES. Seriously unless you get really unlucky and end up living with complete idiots, then you will meet the most interesting, different and amazing people. Living in halls, in my experience, you get to meet people from all over the country and maybe the world.
Ok...a negative. What belongs to you doesn't always stay yours. Living in halls means that somebody at some point may use your utensils or cutlery and not wash it up after themselves. They may take your food and not pay you for it. This is V annoying as you can imagine.
Another positive is Nights out. Living in halls means that a night out can be spontaneous and care free. You don't have to worry about where pre drinks are going be because you have your own flat, who will be last in the taxi going home because everyone you'll be with is in the same flat/accommodation as you.
Negative, although your flatmates may be great you will always meet somebody you clash with in some way or another. You'll meet people who don't put as much effort into your friendship as you do. You may meet somebody who has qualities that you hate all together. Flatmates are risky.
Positive, Freedom! living in halls means you have your own room and this is great because you can stay up til late watching films with your flatmates or alone with netflix. You choose when to have your meals and what meal you have. You have so much freedom to do whatever you want to do and when you do it.
and finally on the bad side is noise. This is a huge thing, seriously. Whether it be the people upstairs, people in your flat, people below you or everyone outside...it's going to get really noisy. Especially on student nights or weekends you tend to get noise from people pre drinking with loud music, people coming back very drunk and noisy. I think with everyone having so much freedom people tend to get a bit over excited and forget the fact there are people who are trying to work or sleep.
